One such feature is automatic background blurring, which uses artificial intelligence to generate a "bokeh" around the subject to blur their background during video calls - perfect for hiding super messy bedrooms.Īnother feature lets users toggle on live captions and subtitles to help deaf or hard-of-hearing users communicate more efficiently. Click the mask icon to get the mask under editing: Enable the layer mask and apply curves to the mask to get some area separation. We do not want to lift already bright areas. The bright areas get too flat, but we'll fix it later: The result is quite the same as the original, but you can make radical changes by editing the BW image and its layer mask.Īt first find a good Color > Color curves > Value setting which lifts the dark areas acceptably. Move the original colored image on top and let it have blending mode Color LCH. Let it be the BW image as invertedĭisable temporarily the layer mask. Start by making a couple of desaturated copies of the original image layer: but we can work around with layer copies. GIMP hasn't adjustment layers like Photoshop, Krita, Affinity Photo etc. We can make one by desaturating and masked contrast increasing. Too full black and white are not colorizable. We make a good colorizable BW version of the image and colorize it with blending mode Color LCH.Ĭolorizable BW image has grey midtones where one expects color. ![]() GIMP 2.10 has a polar version of CIELAB color system named LCH which is especially useful and makes a new answer worth writing. We try something else which wasn't possible before GIMP 2.10. The old approach to fix your photo would have been to increase brightness and contrast in shadow areas with curves and then fight back the introduced excessive colorfulness. If you zoom in you can see that the lifted shadows are very coarse behind the lake, because they were noisy and blurry and the bit depth is too low for nice contrast increasing.īut the result can still be acceptable. The shadow has fortunately sharp border for easy selection. There's fill light, local contrast boost and radical sky blue reduction in shadow areas. The image is opened in a RAW image processing program and got the same treatment as a real RAW image. The next version is a test what is available in the shadows. There's noise, JPG compression errors and too few brightness levels in the dark areas. 8 bit JPG simply hasn't enough data left. Lifting up the shadows will introduce visible blurriness and other errors, which have been less offensive as dark. Your photo is already a heavily processed JPG. There is a more complete tutorial on the matter. For instance, using this technique, I just dimmed a bit the highlights and lightened the shadows. ![]() Once this is done, you can work on the Highlights parts of the image by going to Channels, right-clicking "Hilights" and doing Channel to selection (and then reselecting the layer otherwise you'll be working on the selection channel). Duplicate the channel, and rename the copy "Shadows".Open the Channels list, and copy any of the RGB channels by dragging it to the main list. There are scripts around that can generate the 5 canonical masks, but here is a quick demo with only two. The good things about them is that the effect of the color tools apply in proportion to the lightness or the darkness of pixels so you never have visible transitions. In fact on such image you want to use "Luminosity masks" that are progressive selections that cover the parts of the image within a given luminosity range. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Extra Tip: Other Free Snipping Tool for Windows 10 ![]() ![]() ![]() Sometimes there is just too much going on in your background to find any sort of area that is acceptable for the plugin to analyze. One: every once in a while, you won’t be able to find a uniform area in your image. There are only two drawbacks to this plugin compared to other solutions. This is really useful because it tends to keep your image looking nice and natural. The plugin then takes that information and decides exactly what the noise in your image looks like, and then denoises it accordingly. For example, the gray street area in the image above would be a usable area. ![]() To create a Noise Profile, you have to select a decently sized area of your image that is uniform. It works by creating a Noise Profile, which it uses to get rid of the noise while leaving the majority your image unchanged. It’s always been very powerful, and over the years, it has only gotten better. Neat Video has been around for a while (they are currently on version 4) as a go-to noise reduction solution. ![]() There is also an upgrade path ($99) if you own previous versions of the software. The full version of this plugin is $199, but that will get you access to the plugin in After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro X. However, this usually means there were some pretty serious noise problems in your footage to begin with. Every once in a while, you’ll get some images that look a bit blotchy and unnatural. While this plugin is very good for speed (and is particularly useful for situations involving minimal noise), sometimes it struggles if the noise is particularly bad. However, if you have a particularly noisy shot, you’ll need to mess around with the settings a bit. For most scenarios, the default settings on the plugin will get you where you need to go. For this new version, the developers completely re-wrote the entire plugin with speed in mind. It is by far the fastest noise-reduction solution. The biggest thing this new version has going for it is that it renders on the GPU, which means that the results come almost in real-time. I gotta say, this new version is phenomenal. You just may have to wait a while, especially if you have multiple shots to process.īack in October of 2016, Red Giant launched their new Magic Bullet Suite 13, which included a new version of their Denoiser plugin. If you fiddle around with the settings a bit and try to find the best of both worlds in terms of performance and natural-looking images, you can get good results. At times, with some of the most grainy images, it would take almost thirty seconds to view one frame of the final output. For some of the more grainy shots (like the one above), to get an even passable result, you need to turn up the Noise Reduction level to at least 2 or 3 and raise the Passes to around 3 or 4. However, once you do this, you’ll notice that it takes forever (preview options always slow things down). The plugin defaults to showing you a preview region, so to view the final output, you have to change the Viewing Mode to Final Output. The biggest thing that holds this effect back is that it’s extremely slow. You can read about the process in this PremiumBeat post). If you’re in Premiere, you’re going to have to send your footage over to After Effects by right-clicking and selecting Replace with After Effects Composition and then go back and forth. A major limitation of using this effect for noise removal is that it’s only available in After Effects. Here are my thoughts.įootage via Shutterstock (noise added in post).Īfter Effects has an effect called Remove Grain (pictured above). Other times, you’ll need to bring out the big guns. So which Denoiser should you use in which situation? I took some footage and created some of the grainiest nightmare images I could (using grain elements from our Emulsion pack), as well as some more natural and subtly grainy images, and compared the results. Sometimes the grain is subtle, and you may only need a little bit of polish. Even After Effects features a Remove Grain effect (more later). However, thanks to companies like Red Giant and Neat Video, we can all breathe easy when we see noise in our dailies. ![]() Sometimes it’s unavoidable, especially in documentary-style projects that involve shooting conditions beyond your control. Whether it’s footage that another videographer gave you or footage that you shot yourself, you’re going to see some noise now and then.
